You know you want recessed lighting in Arlington TX. You probably have an idea how many. But how far apart? What size trim? What color temperature for the warm look you want in the living room?
These are the questions that come up on every recessed lighting call. Bolt Electric answers them before we install anything. Layout planning is part of every recessed lighting job we do. Call (817) 754-5700.
We install recessed lighting in living rooms, kitchens, hallways, master bedrooms, and home offices across South Arlington, Dalworthington Gardens, Pantego, Kennedale, and all of Arlington TX.
Recessed lighting is more than just cutting holes and pulling wire. Here is what Bolt Electric does on every recessed lighting installation:
Room assessment - ceiling height, insulation above, existing wiring, and circuit capacity
Layout planning - number of lights, placement, spacing, and trim size for your room dimensions
IC rating check - confirming whether IC-rated or non-IC housing is needed for your attic
Circuit load calculation - confirming existing circuit can handle the additional LED load
Ceiling opening cuts - clean, sized correctly for the housing
Wiring runs - fish wire from switch location to each fixture
Housing installation - secured to joist or remodel clip depending on ceiling access
Trim and LED module installation - correct bulb type and color temperature confirmed
Switch or dimmer connection - we install a compatible LED dimmer if requested
Full test of every light before we clean up and leave
This is the most common question we get before a recessed lighting installation. The answer depends on three things: the room size, the ceiling height, and whether you want ambient light only or task lighting in specific areas.
A general rule for spacing recessed lights: divide the ceiling height by two. That gives you the distance between lights in feet. For an 8-foot ceiling, space lights about 4 feet apart. For a 9-foot ceiling, space them about 4.5 feet apart.
Lights near walls should be placed 2 to 3 feet from the wall to avoid shadows. If you want the lights to wash the walls with light, move them closer - about 18 to 24 inches from the wall.
These are general starting points. Your room layout, furniture arrangement, and how bright you want the space all affect the final count:
| Room | Size | Recessed Lights |
|---|---|---|
| Small bedroom or home office | 100-150 sq ft | 4 to 6 recessed lights |
| Standard bedroom | 150-200 sq ft | 6 to 8 recessed lights |
| Living room | 200-300 sq ft | 8 to 12 recessed lights |
| Large open-plan living area | 300-400 sq ft | 12 to 16 recessed lights |
| Kitchen | 150-200 sq ft | 6 to 8 plus task lighting over counters |
| Hallway | Per 4 feet of length | 1 recessed light every 4 feet |
We walk through the room with you before cutting anything. We position the lights, confirm the spacing looks right, and mark the locations. You approve the layout before we touch the ceiling.
Most Arlington TX homes use 6-inch recessed lights for general room lighting. They produce more light per fixture and are the standard for living rooms, kitchens, and bedrooms.
4-inch recessed lights work well in smaller spaces - hallways, bathrooms, closets, and accent lighting applications. They are also used when the ceiling joist spacing makes 6-inch housing impractical.
We recommend the right trim size for your room during the layout planning visit.
This is the question that trips up most homeowners shopping for recessed lighting: what color temperature do I need? LED bulbs and modules come in different color temperatures measured in Kelvin (K). The number tells you how warm or cool the light looks. Here is the plain-English guide:
Closest to old incandescent bulbs. Cozy, residential feel. Best for: bedrooms, living rooms, dining rooms, anywhere you want a warm atmosphere.
Slightly brighter and crisper than 2700K. Still warm but better for task areas. Best for: kitchens, bathrooms, home offices that also serve as living spaces.
Bright and neutral. No yellow tint. Best for: garages, workshops, laundry rooms, commercial spaces.
Very bright, blue-white light. Best for: task-heavy commercial areas, security lighting. Rarely used in residential living spaces.
For most Arlington TX living rooms, bedrooms, and dining rooms, 2700K is the right choice. For kitchens and bathrooms, 2700K or 3000K. We bring sample light temperatures to the site visit so you can see the difference before we order anything.
The trim is the visible ring around the recessed light at the ceiling surface. Options include:
Textured interior reduces glare. The most common choice for living rooms and bedrooms.
Smooth, shiny interior that maximizes light output. Good for task areas.
Adjustable fixture that can be aimed at a wall, artwork, or specific area. Good for accent lighting.
Similar to eyeball but with a wider range of motion.
Sealed lens for use in showers and wet areas. Code-required for shower installations.
We discuss trim options during layout planning. Most Arlington TX homeowners choose baffle trim for living areas and reflector trim for kitchens.
This is one of the most important technical questions in any recessed lighting installation in Arlington TX - and almost nobody talks about it.
IC stands for Insulation Contact. An IC-rated housing can safely touch attic insulation. A non-IC housing cannot - it must have at least 3 inches of clearance from insulation on all sides.
Why does this matter in Arlington TX? Because most Arlington homes have insulated attics. Texas summers push attic temperatures well above 120 degrees Fahrenheit. If a non-IC fixture is surrounded by insulation that was pushed up against it - which happens all the time - the fixture overheats. Overheated fixtures are a fire risk.
Here is the rule:
New construction with access to attic - almost always IC-rated housing required
Remodel installation with attic above - IC-rated housing strongly recommended in Texas
This covers the vast majority of single-story Arlington TX homes and all top-floor rooms in two-story homes.
Remodel installation with no attic above (between floors) - non-IC may be acceptable
Shower or wet area - sealed wet-rated housing required regardless of IC rating
We confirm the right housing type for every location before we install. We do not put non-IC housing in spaces where insulation is present or likely to migrate.
If your Arlington TX home already has can lights with incandescent or halogen bulbs, an LED retrofit is often the smartest upgrade you can make. No new holes. No new wiring. The old trim and bulb come out and an LED module snaps into the existing housing.
Remove old trim and bulb from each existing can light housing
Install an LED retrofit module that clips into the existing housing
LED module includes its own built-in LED array and driver - no separate bulb needed
Choose color temperature before installation - we recommend 2700K for most living areas
Test dimmer compatibility if dimmers are on the circuit
Most retrofit jobs in Arlington TX take 15 to 20 minutes per fixture. A living room with 8 existing can lights takes two to three hours total.
Not all existing dimmer switches are compatible with LED modules. An incompatible dimmer causes flickering, buzzing, or a limited dimming range with LED retrofits. We test the existing dimmer before retrofitting. If the dimmer is not LED-compatible, we replace it with a compatible LED dimmer in the same visit. We carry common LED dimmer models on the truck. See our dimmer switch installation in Arlington TX page for more.

A standard 65-watt incandescent or 50-watt halogen can light replaced with a 10-watt LED module saves roughly 40 to 55 watts per fixture.
At Oncor's current Texas residential rate, running 8 halogen can lights for 4 hours a day costs roughly $15 to $20 per month. The same 8 lights as LED retrofits cost roughly $3 to $4 per month.
Most Arlington TX homeowners recover the cost of an LED retrofit in one to two years through Oncor bill savings alone.
Most Arlington TX homeowners who install recessed lighting want dimmer control. A dimmer switch turns a well-lit living room into a cozy space for movie night or a dinner party.
For dimmable recessed lighting, three things have to match:
Not all LED modules dim. We specify dimmable LED modules from the start when you want dimmer control.
Not all dimmers work with LED. An old incandescent dimmer on LED fixtures causes flickering and buzzing.
We check the manufacturer compatibility list. You do not have to research this yourself.
We handle all three when we plan the installation. If you want dimmer control, we select compatible LED fixtures and install a matching LED dimmer switch. You do not have to research compatibility yourself.
For rooms with 3-way switch configurations - like a living room with two entry points - we install a Lutron Caseta dimmer system that handles 3-way dimming without running extra wiring.

For a standard living room of 200 to 300 square feet with 8-foot ceilings, 8 to 12 recessed lights spaced 4 feet apart in each direction is a good starting point. For a 9-foot ceiling, space them 4 to 4.5 feet apart. We walk through the room with you, mark the positions, and confirm the layout before cutting any holes. You see exactly where the lights will be before we start.
For living rooms, bedrooms, and dining rooms where you want a warm, cozy feel, choose 2700K. It looks closest to traditional incandescent light. For kitchens and bathrooms where you want brighter, cleaner light, 3000K is a good choice. Avoid 4000K and 5000K in residential living spaces unless you are specifically trying to mimic office or commercial lighting. We bring sample color temperatures to the site visit so you can see the difference before we order the fixtures.
If you have an attic above the installation area - which is true for most single-story and top-floor rooms in Arlington TX - you need IC-rated housing. IC means the fixture can safely contact attic insulation without overheating. Texas attic temperatures exceed 120 degrees in summer. A non-IC fixture surrounded by insulation is a fire risk. We assess the attic condition before every recessed lighting installation and specify the correct housing type.
Yes. Remodel-style recessed fixtures are designed to install from below the ceiling. We cut the opening, fish the wire through the ceiling cavity, and clip the fixture in from below. The ceiling does not need to be opened from above. This works on single-story homes, rooms on the lower floor of a two-story home, and any room where attic access is limited. It takes slightly longer than installation with attic access but produces the same result.
Yes, for most Arlington TX homeowners. A 10-watt LED module replaces a 50 to 65-watt halogen bulb and lasts 15,000 to 25,000 hours versus 2,000 hours for halogen. At Oncor's residential rate, switching 8 halogen can lights to LED saves roughly $12 to $16 per month on your electric bill. Most Arlington TX homeowners recover the full cost of an LED retrofit in one to two years. After that, the savings continue for years.
Yes, but the LED module and the dimmer switch must both be rated for LED dimming and must be compatible with each other. An incompatible combination causes flickering, buzzing, or a very narrow dimming range. We select LED modules and dimmer switches from a compatible pairing for every dimmable recessed lighting installation. If you already have a dimmer, we test it before installing to confirm it will work with your new LED fixtures.
